Welcome!

You are looking at the Gulf of Maine Watershed Information and Characterization System Explorer!

This page allows you explore the GM-WICS database. This database represents landscape, hydrologic and climatic characteristics for the Gulf of Maine Watershed at 2 arc minute grid resolution (9.5 km2).

Regional Map
The Regional Navigation frame can be used to locate the major basins of the Gulf of Maine Watershed in the context of national boundaries, state and province boundaries, or basin boundaries.  To change between national, state, or basin views, use the lists on the left of the regional map. Moving the red square in the regional navigation map, by clicking on a square of interest, changes the view in the data explorer box below.

Data Explorer
The data explorer box, on the lower part of the screen, shows a one arc degree area of the Gulf of Maine Watershed. The arrows around the box will change the location of the box. Geographic coordinates are shown on the border of the box. Information about the mouse location is available in the boxes to the right of the map box. Clicking on a square inside the box changes the description list to the left of the box. To match the view in the regional navigation map with the data displayed in the data box, use the check box (Turn Navigation Map into Data Map).

Use the buttons on the far left to change the data displayed in the map box. The Discharge Stations and Climate Stations buttons (green) access the locations of the stream gages and climate stations within the Gulf of Maine Watershed. Click on station to access the data record for that station. The Basins, Elevation, Soil, and Vegetation buttons (blue) access static gridded data for the region. The Temperature, Precipitation, and Runoff buttons (yellow) access time series of gridded data for the region. Change the date of the data layer using the time series menus. It is also possible to look at animations of the time series grids by clicking the Start Animation button to the right of the map box.
